Dog bites other dogs

My dog bites other dogs.
I got my dog about a year ago from the pound.
Turns out that during the 3 years he was there he got bitten by a dog and since then he growls and tries to attack other dogs we come across in the street. It's really strange because he has no problem with really submissive dogs. Is there anything I can do to help my dog gain back his trust in other dogs.. I find it sad how each time after he growls at other dogs looks so scared and starts shaking.. I hope somebody here has a good idea about what I can do to make my dog feel better around other dogs.

Sounds like he has a Alpha trait and being attacked once helped him go there..He has to be king, will do some research and get back to ya with any good info can find.

What is he breed wise?

Have you tried basic obedience training and socializing your dog?
More socialized calmer he may get or he may just be trying to protect you..

You may have to use a prong collar on walks..
Quick jerk as you say NO or Settle and when listens give a treat..Positive reenforcement.

I will keep searching but most leads to obedience as does not cover animals aggression due to being attacked at 1 time.

Noraa,

It could be fear or it could be dominance. I would find yourself a trainer so they can tell you the difference.

I would suggest taking him to some puppy classes. I realize he's much older than a puppy but if you speak with an instructor and explain what you're trying to do, he/she might let you bring him to class. I don't mean an 8 week old class but maybe the 2nd or 3rd level class at your local pet store.

The reason I'm suggesting this is so you'll be able to determine if it's dominance or fear. Dogs smaller and younger will be less threatening to him. But this fact won't change his desire to dominate them. Your trainer should be able to see if his interaction with this younger dogs is dominance or fear.

Good luck! Smile

Jasmine was scared of any dog smaller but at 4 months went right up to a growling Giant mastiff.

Mauser doesn't seem to be afraid of any size dogs. Sometimes, he'll bark at them or act like he's going to bite them and we pull him back (he's always on a lease when outside). We don't have a fenced in yard.

I would encourage you to get a trainer. There's a lot of possibilities here. It could be that he's not had enough socialization, could be that he's always on a leash, could be that he's picking up your nervousness, could be.... a lot of things. I think someone with experience and who can see the dog in person will be able to give you the best response. Smile
