Healthy dog foods...

I recently acquired a mini schnauzer no more than a few days ago. I think he's a year old, but I'm not too sure because he was a stray when I got him. He had been taken care of by a neighbor of my friend, but the guy got tired of him and simply let him loose.

I noticed last night while brushing him that he has a MAJOR flaking and dry skin problem. Huge flakes litter his fur, and he scratches constantly. I'm fairly sure it's a nutritional deficiency, but I haven't taken him to the vet yet to confirm it. At the moment, I'm feeding him Pedigree, which I know isn't the best quality food. I've heard high-corn and grain content is bad for the dog's skin, and that most grocery store brands are all high corn. Unfortunately, I can't afford top quality food for myself, much less my dog, but I don't want him eating crap that's making him itch and flake all over. All these holistic dog foods are insanely expensive, and there's just no way I can constantly feed my dog a food that's over $10 for a small bag.

Are there any foods out there within my price range ($5-$9 for a small bag) that are really good for combating these skin problems? I'm trying to find something that I can use consistently, instead of switching in and out of high and low quality dog foods whenever I find a good brand on sale. If not, would it be sufficient enough to mix in my current dog food with a higher quality wet food a few times a week?

RE: Healthy dog foods...

I know not greatest food in world but Purina Beneful healthy skin and coat works good on skin like this pup. I was taking care of a GSD with mange and dry skin fed that to him cleared it up and then went back to the food was eating came back so kept him on it. Not everyone can afford all natural or holistics. Like me with 9 large dogs I would go broke so fast at 45 -50 dollars for 35 pounds.

RE: Healthy dog foods...

Yuck stay away from beneful its even worse.

honestly a bag of high quality stuff wont cost to much for mini schnazuer. I used to feed my rough collie orijen 9when he was on dog food. now he eats RAW) a 15lbs bag would last me 3 weeks, I bet you a 15lb bag would last 2 months or more for a small dog, and the bag was 40 bucks. so thats 20 buck a month, 5 bucks week, less then a dollar a day.

You can try looking up RAW dog feedings. its realitivly cheap for me to do with a 60lbs dog, I bet a 15lbs dog would be very cheap
pedigree, purina, beneful, science diet. basiclly anything you can find at walmart or the grocery store is garbage.
